More than a box

Program Creator & Creative Lead

What started as a joke became a multi-year creative program focused on one simple idea: what if everyday objects invited kids to play, imagine, and build?

The project began with a hidden message printed inside an Amazon shipping box—“Please turn me into a fort.” That single line reframed the box from disposable packaging into a prompt for creativity. From there, the idea expanded into a broader initiative I called More Than a Box: a series of playful interventions designed to surprise, delight, and encourage hands-on making.

Over time, the program grew to include DIY crafts, simple machines, interactive games, and experimental experiences—including a VR concept featuring an intergalactic whale. Each iteration explored how lightweight prompts and visual storytelling could spark imagination without instructions, screens, or marketing language.

I created and led the program end-to-end, serving as creative director, designer, and copywriter, while collaborating with partners and production teams to bring individual concepts to life. The work generated billions of organic impressions and became a widely recognized example of playful, human-centered storytelling embedded directly into everyday experiences.

Here’s a video of my presentation at the Conflux Conference, Amazon’s internal creative summit. Each year has a different theme and that year’s was Craftsmanship. I set up a booth, tested some prototype designs, and had a lot of fun watching folks get creative with my work! But it was mostly an excuse to show off the latest cardboard helm designs.
